About She Kills MonstersShe Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she finds herself catapulted into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was her sister’s refuge. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and ’90s pop culture, acclaimed playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.
Design ConceptThe goal of my design is to show Agnes’ developing connection to the world created by her late sister Tilly. To convey this, the sound design starts off naturalistic, with environmental sounds and underscoring for the fantasy world that Chuck plays through a CD player as they advance through the game. As the show progresses, the music begins to blend into the real world of the show. This continues throughout most of the show to reinforce the growing connection between Agnes and Tilly. After scene fifteen when Agnes quits the game in a fit of rage, there is a harsh cut back to reality. The end of scene fifteen is a big moment in the show, and I want to convey the weight of that moment through such a shift in sound. By cutting from the magical sounds and music of the fantasy world into the droll, silent reality, I aim to show the sudden disconnect she has with the world that Tilly created and by extension, to Tilly herself. This further accentuates her need to return to it for herself, for Tilly, and for the resolution of the campaign/show itself. After a brief, but rather dramatic return to the real world, the sound gradually returns to blend fantasy and reality together to give way to the final epic boss battle finale.
